What Certification Means to the University of Vermont Medical Center

Many years ago we hired a consultant to come in and review our management structure and A/R processes. The firm left us with some great recommendations, one of which was to build career ladders in the billing area. I began looking at different certifications that we could use to build stepping stones in the Revenue Cycle. AAHAM was the only place that had the type of certifications that made sense for a billing area. The Certified Revenue Cycle Specialist (then called a Certified Patient Account Technician) seemed like the perfect way for us to take our staff to the next level. The leaders in the Patient Financial Services area took the test first and found it was exactly what we were looking for.  We created a Senior Patient Account Representative role at our hospital and being certified was one of the criteria for promotion.  Promotions came with pay grade raises of 15%.

After we realized how well that process worked, we had one staff member go on to take the Certified Compliance Technician exam. The position that this fit well with was our Billing Compliance Specialist role.  As we began to investigate more about AAHAM and how the certifications allowed for professional development, I decided to try for the Certified Revenue Cycle Executive (then called Certified Patient Account Manager) and it was a fantastic experience.  Although the test at the time was in long hand and very time consuming, it was an absolutely great way to acknowledge how much information Revenue Cycle leaders or others working in healthcare need to know.  I would highly recommend taking the certification that suits you. The Certified Revenue Cycle Professional is an exam that several people in our Patient Financial Services area have taken and that has been a wonderful addition to the certifications from a professional development standpoint.

Overall, our facility has gained a tremendous amount of growth and knowledge as a direct result of AAHAM’s certification programs. Thank you AAHAM!
